Day 4: Navajo Nation Workday & Navajo National Monument

Today was definitely one of the most intriguing days of the service trip. Bright and early, at 7:30 am, we all went to the dining hall to have breakfast. We had French Toast with syrup, cereal with milk, breakfast sausages, and yogurt! After breakfast, we headed back to the sanctuary to do a morning devotional on section 6 of the booklet. We discussed this in groups of 2-4 people over the reflection questions.

After the morning devotional, we packed our sack lunches (sandwiches) and got ready to head out to our six different work sites. Everyone went to their previous worksites as yesterday, except the group at Ms. Kimberley's home had to split up. Three students and Mr. Otsuka went to Ms. Kimberly's home to continue digging the outhouse hole. They started at 40 inches, then reached 49 inches! The rest of the group combined with Mrs. Hayward's group to load up Pastor JR's truck + trailer with rocks. The rocks were going to be used to lay a rock foundation for Ms. Kimberley's future home. They drove to the site, and then filled the trench square with rocks! The outhouse structure group continued on their project and are almost finished building Ms. Kimberley's outhouse.

Today's workday was shorter than usual, ending at 1:30 pm instead of 3:30 pm, because we planned to go to the Navajo National Monument. We gathered together for lunch at the sanctuary before heading out to a 20-minute drive to the monument. At the monument, we learned about the Hopi people and how they lived in caves along the side of the canyon by watching a video, walking around a museum, and hiking down a trail for a better view of where the Hopi tribes resided. It was an amazing view that was truly breathtaking! After a few minutes of pictures and sightseeing, we went back up to drive to the Church.

We had a couple hours of free time until around 6:30 when we left to go on a hike to the nearby Canyon that we went to the other day. There, we had a bonfire and cooked hot dogs for dinner, and then roasted marshmallows to make smores. We were able to watch the beautiful sunset, and once it got dark, we walked back to the Church. Then, we had more free time, which included playing card games, listening to music, and napping. Then, we all got ready to go to sleep as 10:30 was lights out.

Overall, today was a day full of great sunny weather, productive service, connecting and having fellowship with one another, and most importantly, serving our KING, Jesus Christ.
